Marine Biological Anti-fouling Agent
Marine bio-fouling is caused by settlement and growth of micro- and macro-organisms on ships and other marine structures. These organisms include marine plants and invertebrate animals like barnacles, Hydroids, Bivalve mollusks and tube worms. Marine bio-fouling may impair the operational efficiency of a ship or marine structure, such as the settlement on the surface of the hull bottom, the settlement on the interceptor filter screen in seawater cooling system of nuclear power station, the settlement on the steel piles of offshore oil drilling platforms and the settlement on the net cages for marine fishery culture which is significant impact and losses.
So far, the most effective and economical method to prevent ship bio-fouling is the application of an anti-fouling paint that releases a biocide or pesticide compound. Since the ban on TRIBUTYLTIN as an anti-fouling biocide by the International Maritime Organization(IMO), there has been a substantial shift to low copper or copper free as the active ingredient of choice for antifouling coating.
